Understanding Thailand’s Seasons – Best Time to Travel to Thailand

Understanding Thailand Seasons

Thailand doesn’t have your typical four seasons. Instead, the region experiences three tropical seasons: hot, wet, and cool. Let’s look at these seasons in-depth and explore what you can do during these times.

The Hot Season

Thailand Hot Season

The hot season is when most people go, from March to mid-May. Temperature generally runs 35C and above in the northern and central areas of the country.

If you don’t like scorching heat, avoid this time. But for beach and island lovers, the best time to visit Thailand would be the hot season. Don’t forget to pack your favorite tote bag to pack all your towels, sun screen, and essentials you’ll need.

As for the places you’ll visit, you might want to check out some West Coast gems like Phuket, the Similan Islands, and Krabi. These destinations are UNESCO-protected and only open to the public between November and April, making it the perfect time to go. However, if you’re heading to the East Coast, then the best months for you would be January to March or July to September.

Apart from fun in the sun, check out the festivities for the Thai New Year. It happens in April and is celebrated with three days of festivities, including a water fight to symbolize the cleansing of the spirit. Visit Phuket for the best action. Locals and holiday visitors are packed at Patong Beach, where, watch out, they’re likely carrying with their water pistols, garden hoses, and water buckets!

The Wet Season

When we have to talk about the best time to travel to Thailand, we have to talk about the wet season. The wet season lasts from mid-May to October, mainly in the Southwest. This might be an excellent time to visit if you plan to explore indoor activities. For instance, consider exploring museums or visiting vibrant marketplaces.

And it’s important to note here that while this season does receive higher amounts of rainfall, it’s not like a monsoon. There are usually short downpours followed by sunny intervals. So, it’s not like you’re going to be rained in all the time.  It’d be good idea to pack a great travel umbrella just in case; that way, you’ll be kept nice and dry despite the weather.

Some people prefer to travel during this time not only because it’s cheaper but also because you’re likely to get better scenery. In fact, according to Jack Tydeman, a Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Southeast Asia specialist for Audley Travel, “Summer is now commonly referred to as ‘green season’ due to the rains turning the countryside green and filling the rivers and waterfalls.” The temperatures are also still very toasty, reaching up to 34 degrees.

This is a great time to explore what lies under Thailand’s beautiful beaches. Divers from around the world travel to Thailand during this time to visit various underwater sites on the East Coast. The best time to go is November and April, when the seas are calm, and you get the most visibility. Note, however, that Similan and Surin marine parks are closed from mid-May to mid-October.

The Cool Season

Thailand Cool Season

When talking about the best time of year to travel to Thailand, I must mention that there’s the cool season from November to February. For those looking to participate in some of the beautiful festivals Thailand offers during the cool season, like the Yi Peng Lantern Festival, November is a great time.

Many people traveling to the region for this do so to commemorate a specific milestone, whether an anniversary or a birthday. The celebration marks the bringing of good fortune, and wishes for health and happiness is made. And if you’re a little superstitious, you might benefit from having some bad luck be carried away.

Thailand is also a great place to ring in the New Year. The best place to visit during this time is Phuket. You can celebrate at Paradise Beach and enjoy parties, dancing, and fireworks, or venture into Phuket Town, where there’s much to do, including singing contests, food stalls, music, and more. Don’t forget to pack your travel jacket with you to keep you warm on those cool nights!

The Burning Season

Chiang Mai Burning season

It is not really a ‘season’ per se. Still, there is something known as the “burning season” that occurs in the North of Thailand from about the middle of February to April. It’s caused by farmers clearing their fields to plant new crops. Pollution isn’t always a cause for concern, but sometimes visibility can be reduced to a few hundred meters. The amount of smoke there also depends on the winds. So, it’s something you’ll want to keep in mind if you plan on traveling there.

Bustling Times

Also, remember that there are certain times, the Christmas season, for instance, which is especially busy, more so than usual. If you travel during then, you’ll need to make your reservations at least three months in advance. Note that there will be many more people and the accommodations will be more expensive during this time. So, you’ll have to budget your time and money accordingly.
